Post to Reading 3

a. What was the theme of the reading? 2 letters written about the Christian Eucharist in which Cannibalism is assumed by the first. Then the Second explains what actually when on.

       b. Cite a specific idea/phrase that stood out to you. The "promiscuity" of calling each other Brothers and Sisters written by the first author was confusing. Possibly a different meaning than what we see as "promiscuous" now a days.

b. What new ideas did it generate? None. But if the first author were to have gone to a church service where they are having the Eucharist Ceremony now a days, they would have had it explained to them properly.

c. What modern parallels do you see? People's misunderstandings of christian views and their assumptions that what we do is wrong.

d. How does it relate to the text? The spread of Christainity in that time created such an uproar that someone wanted to try and accuse the entire community of 1 crime so they could all be dealt with.

Post to Reading 2

a. What was the theme of the reading? An ancient historian talking about the hellenes, their lack of civilization. The Hellenes eventually are named Archaeans by Homer.

      b. Cite a specific idea/phrase that stood out to you.The Historians bias towards Agamemnon which tells me he is under Agamemnon's orders to make it look as if the king is perfect.

b. What new ideas did it generate? What if this historian were from a neutral country or tribe?

c. What modern parallels do you see? History is written by the victors. This is a constant throughout history and today.

d. How does it relate to the text? America's views on their "wars" such as the Vietnam war, which we have now called a "conflict" because we lost.

Blog to Reading 1

a. What was the theme of the reading? Hammurabi's Tablets  and the rules he wrote down that seem very similiar to the laws of the Ten Commandments.

 

b. Cite a specific idea/phrase that stood out to you. Section I gave almost 40 different senarios of a man and woman committing adultery. each one with the usual punishment, death.

 

b. What new ideas did it generate? It made me think of the people I have heard who argue Moses took many of his Laws from Hammurabi. Whether or not that is true, I would like to turn the tables and ask, what if God told Hammurabi that these laws are just and are what should be written down?

 

c. What modern parallels do you see? Some of the "lesser" punishments are doing the king's work for a certain amount of time. that makes me think of prison in this day and age.

 

d. How does it relate to the text? Have been talking about the Politics of the day and age and how it was 1 man making all the rules, whether they were right or wrong, they had to be followed.

Blog to Reading 8

a. What was the theme of the reading? The Theme of the reading is the 12 articles of Peasants which is simply 12 requests by peasants to a lord about their working conditions.

b.  Cite a specific idea/phrase that stood out to you. I found it interesting that the serfs continued to go back to the scriptures. It Seems they are almost mockingly asking for the lord to review the bible to see if the things he is doing are wrong. The Serfs also seem absolutley ok with revising anything they write down that is not completely on the same page as scriptures. i think this is because they feel they are being lorded over by a very hypocritical king. Explain why.

b. What new ideas did it generate? I think it generated Ideas of true freedom. all they want is to be released so they can be free.

c. What modern parallels do you see? I find modern parallels in the Ghettoes of America. Many people try all their lives to escape the ghetto they were born in, yet not very many make it out. These people feel opprressed and misunderstood, they feel as if nothing is being done for their sake.

d. How does it relate to the text? This has a lot to do with Absolutism and the beginning of the French Revolution. There was only a upper and lower class, lords and serfs, slaves and their "owners". This led to a massive uprising that the upper class could not control. I believe if these articles were not met, there was more than likely some sort of revolt or attempt at revolt that ended up happening.
